Observations from today’s readings and today’s S-WOD, Thursday, 20 February 2025:

Leviticus 7:11-21 — “This is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings that one may offer to the Lord….”

God has always been delighted to receive special offerings from those whose hearts have been set apart to serve Him (Deut. 10:12–22).  When worshipers under the old covenant wanted to present a special offering before the Lord, above and beyond what the Law required (Lev. 1–2; 4), a peace offering was brought to the sanctuary out of the overflow of the worshiper’s heart.  Freewill offerings were given in response to God’s unexpected or unsought generosity.  The peace offering was the only sacrifice worshipers could eat.  Being at peace with God is wonderful indeed and worthy of celebration with a great feast.  For poor Israelites, this may have been the only time they ever ate meat.  Moreover, strict cleanliness laws had to be followed regarding the eating of the sacrifice (vv. 19–21).  Though at peace with the worshiper, our Creator remained holy and could still not tolerate any impurity in His presence.

Leviticus 7:11-14 — “And this is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings that one may offer to the Lord.  If he offers it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with the thanksgiving sacrifice unleavened loaves mixed with oil, unleavened wafers smeared with oil, and loaves of fine flour well mixed with oil.  With the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving he shall bring his offering with loaves of leavened bread.  And from it he shall offer one loaf from each offering, as a gift to the Lord.”

“In the symbolism of the sacrificial system, this is fascinating.  The peace offering was accompanied by the priest holding before God unleavened bread in one hand and leavened bread in the other.  In some ritual manner, the unleavened and the leavened were waved before the LORD.  From a New Testament perspective, we may connect this to the fact that Jesus Christ has made peace between Jew and Gentile, breaking down the wall that previously separated them (Ephesians 2:11-18), and Jesus Christ Himself is our peace (Ephesians 2:14) because of the sacrifice He made of His own flesh (Ephesians 2:15).”  (David Guzik)
