Observations from today’s readings and today’s S-WOD, Tuesday, 18 February 2025:

Here is a short message on Leviticus 5 delivered by the late Dr. J. Vernon McGee: https://www.blueletterbible.org/audio_video/popPlayer.cfm?id=4077&rel=mcgee_j_vernon/Lev

Leviticus 5:1 — “If anyone sins in that he hears a public adjuration to testify, and though he is a witness, whether he has seen or come to know the matter, yet does not speak, he shall bear his iniquity….”

Yes, you are held accountable for not sharing the truth with others. No truth is more important to humankind than the Gospel. How faithful have you been in sharing it?

Leviticus 5:5, 6 – ….when he realizes his guilt in any of these and confesses the sin he has committed, he shall bring to the LORD as his compensation for the sin that he has committed, a female from the flock, a lamb or a goat, for a sin offering. And the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin.

Old sins, even ones that were never revealed or that have been long forgotten by others, still need to be addressed. If at all possible, you must seek restitution and reconciliation with those against whom you have sinned. (review Exodus 22 on restitution)

Leviticus 5:11 — “But if he cannot afford two turtledoves….”

The opportunity for atonement was available to everyone, and God afforded the poor to make offerings within their means. On the other hand, If a person could offer a greater sacrifice, it would be a sin to offer a lesser one.

Leviticus 5:17 – “If anyone sins, doing any of the things that by the Lord’s commandments ought not to be done, though he did not know it, then realizes his guilt, he shall bear his iniquity.”

Ignorance of the law is no excuse. “If, again, the guilt of an action depended entirely upon a man’s knowledge, we should have no fixed standard at all by which to judge right and wrong: it would be variable according to the enlightenment of each man, and there would be no ultimate and infallible court of appeal…. The art of forgetting would be diligently studied, and ignorance would become an enviable inheritance…. Ignorance of the law of God is itself a breach of law, since we are bidden to know and remember it.” (Spurgeon)

“Cross” Fit S-WOD (Spiritual Workout of the Day) – 18 February 2025: Today, consider whether there are sins in you distant past or sins which have gone unrecognized by others in which you have never sought forgiveness from the offended or sought to make any sort of restitution. Regardless of whether others expect it our not, seek forgiveness and restitution as an act of obedience and worship before the LORD. Do what is right because it is right.
